Dim view of Govt
The governments do not want to do this just so they can tax people. Taxation is "part" of what they do. They are service oriented providers who try what they can to make sure people get what they need.

Many of these municipalities which are putting this infrastructure in, are doing it FOR the people, not the money. Many of the Telcos refuse to put service in areas they do not feel would be profitable. This leaves many areas in a 56K world. Even you more industrious areas have pockets where nothing more than 56K is offered. In order to attract businesses to the area, the municipality has to provide services. The changing structure of business is high speed Internet access.

Each municipality has to negotiate with the Telco providers every 5 to 10 years for service. For years, the Telco had the upper hand, and the municipality could do nothing about it. Many Telcos would not go into areas well established by conpetitors, because it would be too much work. Leaving a monopoly. The municipality has to provide this service, so they loose barganing rights.

Providing this as a utility or optional service is good for the community, and generates better pricing by the competition.

I investigated the possibility for a local community to install ISP services, because SBC and Comcast REFUSED to cover the entire town. You are being gorged for the service! In this area SBC was charging $49/month, same as Comcast. We proved we could do it for $19/month. Is this a detriment for the community?! Who is hurt here? The community can get a descent service (cable speeds) at a fraction of the cost.

In my book, saving money is a good thing!!!

The taxation bit is a scare tactic presented by the BIG BOYS in Telcos.

Think for yourself, and get the facts.
