Mixed thoughts...
I can certainly understand the City wanting to do this. The Telco's and cable folks have been dragging their feet far too long in deployment, the cost is way out of line compared to other countries, and speeds are well, not very speedy. Add to it the hindrance of all the laws on what constitutes "communication", who is allowed access to what, (see the fights over 911) and all the law suits being filed it's enough to make many say to heck with it, we'll do it ourselves. Heck, you might even say the Telco's and Cable guys brought this on themselves.

But is a government owned monopoly in the best interest of all concerned? Make no mistake, it will be a monopoly as no independent can compete against a never ending financial resource. (Taxes)

Consider that in almost every city in the US, the infrastructures are failing badly. Poor streets, low water supply when needed, sewage treatment badly out of date, little or no funds to replace needed police and fire equipment, school buildings in sorry repair, etc..

So what happens say 3 to 5 years down the road when new technology is ready to replace the existing infrastructure? (WiMAX?) Does the city go in debt again or do they simply do as they do now and tell people they must be satisfied with what they have? Do they then pass laws/ordinances to prevent competition from coming in and taking the cream off the top? That temptation will be very hard to resist.

People in these cities need to really think this one through, ask themselves how well the city has handled other infastructure issues, and are there other alternatives that make more sense. In other words, look before you leap...
