The key to why that will happen is two fold.
The push now is to build the standard for the WiMAX mesh. That means each install acts as a sort of repeater to the next install. Get enough of them out there and connectivity becomes omni-present.
The second and more critical reason is that people in general are tired of being on the backend of what ever the cable and Telco guys feel like dishing out.
I can see a day in the not so distant future where the only thing left to the telco's is the backbone and over time even that will lose significance.
