I've got no argument...
...with the idea of cities providing essential services, as opposed to farming them out to private companies. I would question whether or not broadband access really qualifies as an "essential service", but that's a different discussion.

My only complaint about this scenario is that it doesn't seem fair for cities to be regulating the same private companies they are competing with, using public funds. If cities want to provide broadband access to all citizens, then fine. But de-regulate the telcos and cable companies also. Let them compete with the cities on a level "playing" field. Let the citizens have a choice as to who their provider is. And don't let the cities arbitrarily raise rates on private broadband providers to effectively shut them out of the market (and if you don't think that will happen, you don't understand how government works).
