My best advise is not to use (IE) at all. Download Firefox or Netscape. I never open IE at all and shut down immediately sites that use IE popups.
This is a process.
Download and run Spybot-Search and destroy. The free version will do just fine for you. Take note of all the things it finds on your computer. You may have to restart computer and run it again.
Then check Contol Panel/ Add/Remove Programs. Look for anything that is attached to your computer that you did not place there. Usually a toolbar/internet optimizer/etc. Remove them. What you remove, be sure to take notes on. Do not remove anything you are not sure of. If you are not sure, type that name into Google and read about it to make sure it is not something placed there by a program you are running or windows.
Next check your C: Drive for files that are left behind after you remove items from your computer.
After you have completed this task and hoping you did not find anything like Internet Optimizer, because that takes registry work to get rid of completely. Delete your internet files and all offline content. Empty your cookies. In Taskbar and Startmenu, under the tab Start Menu click on customize and then click clear to remove records of recent use of your computer. Once that is done, go into your C: drive under windows and open up all TEMP FILES. View what is left in there and remove them. Then look in the file Downloaded Programs and remove all ACTIVE X files loaded onto your computer. The ones you need will be reinstalled when you need to use them again. (*Warning* after removing active x installed on your computer, it means that a program will not execute until it reinstalls the controller. But it will reinstall it.)
I keep a notebook and after I do a restore on my computer I keep track of what goes into my Add/Remove programs and Downloaded Program File. It is the Active X Controllers that continues to bring up POP UP ads on your computer and redirects pages to different sites.
I will not advise you to get into your registry unless you know something about working in your registry.
If you are still having problems, download the program HI-Jack This and post your stuff on their site. They will be very happy to assist you in cleaning out your registry.
