Hardware based solutions and the Marketplace
All of the external hardware based solutions are easy to implement and the router manufacturers are already using chip based security, but Microsoft is considering an onboard chip based solution for all PC's, and that involves getting all of the Manufacturers, ISP's, and Software vendors to agree for starters. It also probably means rocking Intel and AMD's boats just a little, don't you think? After all, the chip and motherboard manufacturers have just spent a tidy sum on the forthcoming progression to 64bit multicore PCI-X hardware platforms. Now Microsoft comes along and wants to add security chips to all of the motherboards (and/or NIC's and Cable & DSL modems). Every software vendor will have to have some new functionality that takes advantage of "the new security technology" to advertise. Macafee, Symantec, & Trend Micro will all wish that the idea would just go away. Sun & Oracle will have to face the spector of low cost LAN's becoming as secure as their pricier products. Do you see what I mean by "difficult to implement"?

Let's hope that they do get as far as securing the X86 CPU's I/O ports and basic buffers with a hardware solution. At least they'll slow or stop some of the phishing attacks . And to think that I can remember when keyloggers were used in commercial and governmental workplaces to insure security and discourage employee abuse of resources. The problem is that, at about CS or CE course level 102, everyone learns how to extract data from the standard keyboard buffer. It's about time for a hardware redesign, especially if it means purging some of the vulnerabilities that result from the maintenance of backwards compatibility. The basic x86 I/O port structure dates back to the Zilog Z-80 and CPM.

I'll rephrase......"Securing Industry wide adoption of a new hardware based security solution is a difficult task; even for a market determinant like Microsoft"

Better??
