It can be reconstructed...
The other night I watched a Discovery Channel program about forensic investigation. Two detectives were asking questions to a guy, then showed him a floppy disk (part of the evidence), and then the guy just chopped the floppy disk before the eyes of the surprised detectives.

The forensic lab just put the floppy back together with some adhesive tape and used a custom-made magnetic disk reader. And recovered the information.

So, you can smash the platters, but if it can be reconstructed, it can be read (given enough motivation).

But I agree, for most uses, it's goof enough.

Besides, most wiping software cannot be used on crashed hard disks. How do you protect your info on a disk you cannot read? Maybe smashing it is a good choice.
