re: not so sure
I remember the pre microsoft days very well. There we perhaps 6 different operating systems, maybe 10 major hardware venders. Software did not exist like it does 2 day. the writers could not write a program specific to all those os's.

it was never certain if the OS was compatible with the hardware. For the most part the hardware venders, like IBM drove the computer market. there were no integrated suites like MS office, there was a only seperate word processing, or spreadsheet progran.

The HW venders had proprietary systems & wrote software that only ran on their hardware. It wasn't until microsoft teamed up with IBM & wrote DOS that things start to come together. the internet was confined to the big iron shops (IBM, Honeywell) that had the expertise to control and use it.

It wasn't until microsoft wrote windows one was there an OS that allowed various software packages to run together on one OS. Then when they came out with MS Office was there a suite that combined all the tools into one package, and you felt confident that if you bought it, it would run on your PC.

Im not a MS lover by no means but I was grateful when they came out with stuff I could buy and use with confidence.
