OS X root is disabled by default
For anyone not sure, root is disabled on OS X and you have to
run a command line to enable it. And yes OS X is not Unix/
Linux like, thank goodness, even though it's core is FreeBSD.

Any OS is vulnerable to something, some worse than others.
Some systems are more vulnerable as well dependant on their
owners knowledge, just like the wireless networks that are
beaming with no security settings (my free internet).

I have caught about forty various viruses coming to my
computer over the past week. Thankfully none of these work in
OS X, but at least I have some protection for when I get one that
does (and hopefully stops it).

The biggest issues that drive me crazy are spam/ad/fish-ware
etc. Everyone around me that has a Windows computer is
constantly coming to me for help and I'm tired of working on
Windows. I did it for WAY too many years and would like to put
it behind me completely. I've found that the freeware programs
tend to work best against this crap (ad-aware, spyware) so far.
If anyone has another thought please share.
