even if you unzip the file, you still have to
chmod it to make it executable

No, you are wrong. I tried this out on my SuSE
box and if you tar a script that has the
executable flag set, it still has the executable
flag set when you untar it. I was able to
execute an attached (and tarred) shell script on
Linux in one fewer step than I needed in
Windows. Konqueror is so user friendly and
helpful that I didn't need to go to the command
line for anything.

Even if it's a Linux virus, who runs Linux as
root? The virus will be contained to whatever
the non-root user can do.

It took me 30 seconds to set myself up as a
regular user (non administrator) in XP so
really, it isn't a question of technical ability
in XP, it is a matter of poor defaults.
Regardless, you trivialize the damage that can
be done in the user space. Your machine can
easily be turned into a bot and all of your
personal data can be harvested and deleted. For
a home user, knowing that your whole
machine hasn't been destroyed won't make you
feel any better after losing all of your
personal data.
