I have to disagree. Before the PC and Microsoft, computers were either minis or mainframes which cost well over 6 and 7 figures, or incompatible "toy" systems like the Tandy CoCo, Commodore PET, Vic 20, etc.
IBM was very big in the business machine market (cash registers, mainframes, etc), when they introduced the PC. Business owners who were used to IBM equipment jumped at the chance to own a computer made by IBM. The fact that IBM included a technical manual which gave complete hardware specs, technical details, and enough geeky information to practically build your own IBM compatible computer simply meant that other manufacturers would be able to duplicate the machine easily. This led to competition within the PC market, which drove prices down.

It had nothing to do with Microsoft. It was the easily cloned hardware that made computing cheap today.
