What we'd be missing...
I'm so sure it would be all that much different... maybe better? I can't think of anything Microsoft actually invented... I'm sure someone can help me happy What exactly would we be missing?

Well.. Let's see..

Cheap computers/parts. Computers would still be costing $5,000+ if it weren't for the fact that Microsoft has, over the past 23 odd years produced an operating system (first DOS and later Windows) that's made computing mainstream. Microsoft may NOT have invented squat, but without them, computers would probably NOT be as ubiquitous as they are today. They made computers easy to use, spurred demand and we now have computers that are affordable by the masses.

It's like Henry Ford. He didn't invent the automobile, but he help make it so everyone can have one.
