To tell the truth...
there would be just as many viruses for unix variant operating systems if OS X(BSD)/Unix/Linux/BeOS owned 90% of the PC market share. Virus writers go for the target rich environment.

Would it be more difficult for virus writers? Possibly.

You would have to consider that, if the unix variants had that much of the market, grandma down the road would have a unix box.

How often do you think the average user is going to apply patches and upgrade kernels?

I have Win XP Home, Win XP Pro, Windows Server 2K3, Win2K Pro, Win 2K Advanced Server, WinMe, Mandrake 10.1, 8.0 and 6.5 and Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 running on boxes right now.

My WinXp Home box has been running on a broadband connection for over three years and my WinMe box has been running on the same broadband connection for 5 years. Guess how many viruses I have had in that time. Zero. Then again, I have had the same number of viruses on my Linux boxes.

So, if you are going to gloat about how secure your Mac is, you should thank Microsoft for being such a big target because they are taking the brunt of the viruses while the other operating systems live in relative obscurity.
