Any suggestions from the fans?

First of all, I wouldn't suggest a Linux distro for this type of user (no offense, but he sounds like a very casual user. A linux distro that is not preinstalled (hence no driver issues) will prompt far more questions than answers.

That said, if he were to use Linux, I'd suggest the latest from Suse or Mandrake, as they tend to be ultra-user friendly. Yast and (ah hell, whatever Mandrake uses, it's been a while) are great for doing updates.
