Not a software problem?
Before you join the Geek chorus proclaiming gloom and doom for Windoze, make sure it's not a hardware problem. You may have a bad card in the machine, and you could press F8 and see if you can come up in Safe Mode. Have it checked out by a competent shop before you give up.

If it is a software issue, the advice about a router with NAT functionality and a hardware firewall may be a safer way to go. I use Zone Alarm Pro and have configured my router to be a firewall (anything strange goes to a machine that doesn't exist on my network ;))
