Protect yourself with a Virtual PC
Symantec has a problem. So what? All Windows software companies occasionally do. So save yourself a lot of problems and do what I do.

If you have to run Windows, run it as a virtual machine on a Mac using Virtual PC, or on a Linux/Intel machine using VMWare.

Build the virtual Windows machine the way you like it and then make a copy of the VM. When your Windows "computer" gets hacked, infected with a virus and/or spyware, or just craps out, (like 90+% of all windows computers), you can delete the screwed up VM and replace it with a fresh copy in minutes.

And you won't even have to call Microsoft and beg them to let you register Windows again.
