You do realize that any multiple button mouse works just fine with a Mac, and all you need to do to make it work is plug it in, right?

---our mac guy here at work always tells me the same trick to make a mac work again. (pre osx: rebuild the desktop) osx reboot, if no go, reinstall---

You should fire this guy immediately, he has no idea what he's talking about. I've never, never had to reinstall OS X. And if you want a quick fix, even my grandma knows the first thing you do is repair permissions. Seriously, if that's the advice you're getting, your company may be in trouble.
