Good move by Microsoft!
It is not really a question of whether the time and the fine are too harsh, but rather a question of whether or not they are effective. They can have the effect of driving the offender in the wrong direction at the same time they make a martyr out of the person. Better to impose a penalty which does not glorify the criminal and at the same time moves the criminal in the direction of maturity and rehabilitation. The people who do these things are in fact very bright people. They are very misguided, but they are not stupid. You fine them and imprison them and the bottom line is that eventually they will be out and back at their old games. Instead why not make an effort at socializing them so that they will not be as likely to pull the same stunt again.
