Laptop theft puts data of 98,000 at risk

I bet nobody even gets fired over this

even though at least two people should.

First, the idiot who had this data on a laptop. Why a laptop? In the course of running a university, NONE of this data is needed anywhere outside the school.

Second, the IT idiot who helped them get the data. I am sure this data actually came from a server at the school. An admissions office employee is unlikely to be able to access and query a remote database without help. Someone from IT probably did a data dump or made a query for them. If the office worker did it on their own, the fact that they could is a problem in itself.

One other thought - maybe the laptop was stolen by its assigned user at the school. Take it home at lunch, then report it stolen when you return. That's one way to get a free system!
