I half agree
The modern (and not so modern computer) is a tool that becomes whatever the user wants it to be. It is unlike a hammer which has only 1 or 2 very well defined uses. It is unlike a gaming console which, while more complicated, is pretty much a stateless machine. The computer is an extremely complex thing so I agree with the TOO COMPLEX statement.

I think the problem with computers is not that they are badly designed but that the industry sells them like they are toasters when in fact, they are more like cars. Say you are not a mechanic, you know nothing about how cars work, but you want to install an automatic car starter. Do you do it yourself or do you let the tech guys do it for you? Say something breaks. Do you fix it yourself or do you take it in to the garage? No one who isn't mechanically inclined buys a car and expects to maintain it themselves. The auto industry has been very good about maintaining end user expectations. The computer industry, on the other hand, has been terrible. They sell the computer along with the expectation that the user can do anything they want with it and there won't be any problems and if there are, the user can fix it themselves.

Is the technology too complex for the trained individual? No more complex than a car to a trained mechanic. The difference is in end user expectations. The auto industry has done a good job of managing expectation, the computer industry hasn't.
