IE Vulnerable 98% Of 2004
Why isn't ZDNet reporting this?

The war of statistics continues, as advocates and corporations try to prove which Internet browser is more secure. The latest news comes from Belgian security consultancy ScanIT, which claims that Microsoft's Internet Explorer was vulnerable for 98% of 2004, whereas Mozilla's browsers were only vulnerable 15% of the year.

The statistics were put together based on the time between the disclosure of vulnerabilities and when a patch was issued. According to ScanIT IE was vulnerable for all but 7 days in 2004 (October 12-19), while Firefox/Mozilla were vulnerable for only 56 days.

The report did indicate that part of the reason for the discrepancy is that the Mozilla browsers are not targeted as much as IE. Furthermore, IE seems to be at a disadvantage in that security researchers are more prone to disclose vulnerabilities privately to the Mozilla development team rather than publish their findings immediately as they do for IE.
