Police officers and Geeks are different professions!!
The computer is part of a criminal investigation. Investigators are taught not to focus on any one piece of evidence. For example, if you want to know who was using a computer in the house, you interview everyone with access to the computer and determine who used the computer and when. You then utilize time/date stamps and logs to catch the bad guy. Just like other evidence, the computer is only a piece of the puzzle not the whole puzzle. That's why police departments shouldn't hire geeks to run the whole computer crime division.
