Simpler than you realize
You can verify, if you are patient. It does take a bit of time. For example, Microsoft, Sun, Red Hat and Mandrake all provide things they created as well as links to products 3rd parties make to work with their products. These organizations do a pretty good job most of the time -- but even they can make a mistake. There are media outlets that have user forums that discuss these things, like right here or at SlashDot. Unless you are prepared to rebuild often, or at least uninstall, then your life as a beta tester for someone else can be quite unsatisfying. Some enjoy high risk behavior, running unverified code is high risk behavior.

Does that make sense?
