No matter what OS you use, it's up to the user to protect themselves. If they do stupid things, bad things can happen. Whether it's running an exe in Windows, or running an RPM as root in linux. The difference really comes down to linux users GENERALLY (although certainly not as a rule) are knowledgable enough to NOT run an RPM (or DEB) as root if they don't know what it is or where it came from. GENERALLY Windows users just click whatever is thrown at them. Of course that doesn't apply to a power user, or even a reasonably skilled user. But the infamous "Joe Sixpack" isn't that user. Therein lies the problem.
