Although you are always NWOR...
this is as good a post as any to put this.

I made a huge mistake. I don't know how it happened but listen to this recipe for disaster that was my wife's computer:
- Windows XP Home (no service pack)
- Automatic updates: off
- Running as administrator
- Uses IE exclusively
- No anti-virus
- No anti-spyware

Her computer had been like this for a year. The only redeeming features are that her computer is behind a NAT router and that she is smart enough not to run attachments or FREE FREE FREE DANCING ELVES programs although she certainly is not a tech-savvy person.

The first thing I did was install anti-virus and anti-spyware, ran the scans with fingers crossed and... nothing. Okay, not nothing. There was one trojan horse .PIF in her recycle bin and about 7 things identified as spyware, only 4 of them were really serious enough to be quarantined and even they weren't all that bad.

What does that tell me? A firewall and user common sense are easily the two most important things you need to be safe on the internet. Technical security will take you the rest of the way to 99.9999% safety but aren't as big a deal as certain people here want to make them out to be.

Okay, sorry for interrupting with some common sense, back to your zealotry!
