Windows User: The weak link...
I watched an eight year old over a period of days making use of their new computer with a DSL connection. Interestingly, they mostly played the games installed for them, but now and again they clicked on the browser icon to have a look around. They had a nice home page set up for them and it was increasingly more familiar for them each time they tried it. There was a powerpoint from Dad and several video files from Grandma and other family members. Very nicely structured content from the HOME PAGE. Instant E-Mails could be sent to the family with a single click and so on.
When I watch the people at work, however, I see what has to be the most mischievous behavior allowable. Invariably, they shoot off to the Chat Rooms and Instant Messaging apps. Just for a few seconds to let the other end know that they're back. And anything even remotely lascivious in an E-Mail subject line and BOOM, they open it! When will we learn? These people are all getting training, alright, but they have no discipline.
The people at home who may work in a non-computer job every day; these people are the weak links. They bought an e-Machine at Sam's Club and plugged it in. In a couple months it starts acting squirrely and they figure they hit the wrong button or other.
Starting with my close friends, I began a campaign to help them get a grip on the computer thing. After all, they're carpenters, and house painters, and mechanics, but they have children (who help out a lot) and they want the computer to be there for the kids research and homework and stuff. It has since turned out to be somewhat of a cottage industry that has grown.
