Surely as IE's market share is decreasing
the number of vulnerabilities must also be dropping?

IE's percentage of vulnerabilities is dropping. It used to have 100% of vulnerabilities, now it has some fraction less than that.

The number of vulnerabilities is
proportional to the quality of the software, PERIOD!

Actually, I agree with this. A vulnerability exists in the code whether or not someone has found it. The number of found vulnerabilities is going to be some number based on the quality of the software and the number of people looking for it.

To be honest though, most of the malware attacks I've seen recently have had nothing to do with vulnerabilities in the software. Almost all of them have been 100% socially engineered attacks convincing a Windows user to run the malware. Since each attack can only target one home OS, it makes sense that you would attack the users running the OS with 90+% of the market.

To recap:
1. Number of vulnerabilities is 100% proportional to the quality of software.
2. Number of found vulnerabilities is proportional to the quality of the software and the number of people looking for weaknesses.
3. Current attacks target user vulnerabilities more than OS vulnerabilities.
4. Current attacks are geared towards Windows users since there are more technically unsavvy Windows users than Linux/MacOSX users by a long, long, long shot.

Is that clear?
