Well, I tried Avast....
following the suggestion by KOS MOS, and not being too impressed with Symantec after jumping through hoops to update, I have just installed and run the free Home Edition of Avast. I have had Symantec on my machine (auto-updated) for over 3 years. Avast just found Trojan-gen (Delphi) in 8 files and Bropia-G (WRM) in another.

A good friend of mine has just had his machine totally disabled by a virus contained in a file received over MSN Messenger. Which virus, to be fair, was detected by Symantec when it tried to insert itself on my machine. I'll certainly tell my friend about about Avast though. Thanks KOS MOS.
