Sure, go by price, or...
How about going by results? Avast will find stuff McAffee and Norton will miss for YEARS. Avast found a bug Symantec's NAV 2004 had failed to find for almost 2 years, and NAV2002 had failed to find for 1 year on my PC. 3 years a file with a hidden Keystroke logger sat on my hard drive, and was not spotted despite bi-weekly virus sig updates and weekly full scans.

As for McAffee, it is what I had on my little file server at my last home, and it also failed to find that file. Avast found it before I even ran a scan.

I could go on, but my point apparently was lost on you, (not surprising though, I tend to babble, and am not often very clear). I'm saying that Symantec, and McAffee, are both guilty of offering a product that is falling behind the leading edge, and neither company seem to be aware of this. They run in their same old rut, but if one goes out and tries the competition, one may well find that the competition has not only caught the old guard up, but indeed, they have passed them by.

You said it best, you get what you pay for, and I feel you're getting more with Avast than with NAV or Mcaffee, (Odd, considering I've paid nothing for Avast). (BTW, Please avoid taking this back to the corporate issue, as I did specifically mention for HOME use, right?). Anyone trusting McAffee or Symantec too much today is likely to get burned. My opinion.
