Of course you'll need both hardware and software

to make this trusted computing thing work. The software won't work without the hardware and the hardware won't work without the software. So having the hardware without the software means diddly-squat. And if you never even get a sniff of the software (for example, if you never even install "trusted computing software") all of this means diddly-squat.

Having the hardware won't keep you from playing your MP3s. But then again, even having the software won't prevent that. Having both hardware and software can only unlock locked media, it cannot lock unlocked media. So if you're against "trusted computing", just don't use any "trusted computing" media. Don't let the existence of the hardware and software pieces get you in a twist, because if you simply don't use the locked media you'll defeat their purpose.
