Hurray or Boo
It looks like we have one FEEL-GOOD Democrat and one who actually might have the idea.

Sen. Jon Corzine, D-N.J will make everyone feel good by requiring a company officer to "attest" to the security of the information. Now I feel better NOT!!!

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y appears to have the right idea. "... 'we're going to force companies to demonstrate a need for customers' personal information before requiring it from them.' " If he follows this up with penalties for false reasons, I might consider moving to NY when he is up for re-election.

"Schumer, for instance, indicated he wished to regulate all commercial Web sites" Now that's the right idea.

"... an excuse..." said Jim Harper, director of information policy at the free-market Cato Institute. "These proposals are not focused on harm to consumers, which is what matters most."

That's wrong Mr. Harper. Senator Schumer's proposal is aimed at prevention of the harm rather than requiring a suit for restitution. The prevention of the useless collection of personal information is by far the better idea. If the information is NOT collected, it can NOT be stolen.

Rep. Joe Barton, T-TX, has the idea correct. "Under current law these companies have a legal right to package information and do almost anything they want with it," Barton said. "I personally see no socially redeeming value in anyone having the right to give away and sell my personal information unless I approve it."

BOO!!! Jon and Jim.

HURRAY Charlie and Joe. Go Get 'Em.
