I know, but at the time it seemed easier to indulge in some "poetic license", so to speak, and describe it as a "404". The actual full explanation would have been too wordy for the context. But your description of it is good too - "you would get a generic error stating a dns error that the server couldnt be found". I was thinking of the actual technical mechanics of the process, so I used the "404" analogy in its place.
