Well put Sunny. Copyright is the right area for software not patent protection - thought and logic are not patentable items they are elements of abstraction, literary by nature and the building blocks of future development. To allow patent protection only blocks that path to others - "I've thought it, you now may not" (abject drivel).
Before the flame-fest starts, I have no objection to the writers of novel software benefitting from their work (to do otherwise would be an equally indefensible stance and would stifle innovation) but don't attempt to prevent anyone else expanding upon that work by exercising a patent lock-out.
