Patent office has some issues
I have no problem patenting unique ideas, it can provide incentives and rewards for the deserving inventor(s). Software patents are surely one of the most abstract things our undefunded and possibly unqualified Patent Office can examine. I think if Symantec, or anyone else, truly innovates then ther rewards should follow. However, as we have seen in the Amazon One-click, various browser suits et al, patents are sometimes isssued for things that may not really merit a patent, i.e. they are not really inventing anything.

I think software should be treated like books or music, copyright it, collect royalties if someone wants to use the code and we can still maintain the necessary rewards that can help spur innovation.
