You can always tell...
...that a company or person has something to hide when they deny everything then immediately seek legal action against the whistle-blower. This isn't an "always" but it pretty much says they screwed up.

How refreshing it would be for a company to come out and say, "Yep, we screwed up. We're gonna fix it right away. We're gonna change how we do business to make sure stuff like this never happens again."

Probably not in my lifetime...
