What he is saying is Microsoft needs to fix
its OS. Instead of focusing on bringing a product to market that is needed because the OS is like a sieve. It's about priorities.

One thing is evident, there are more anti virus and anti spyware apps than ever, but the malware situation justs keeps getting worse. The OS is the foundation of everything that runs on the PC. And it doesn't matter how good the apps are, if the foundation is shakey, the whole structure will be shakey. SP2 is an example. E-vandals have already found ways to punch through the wall built by SP2. And since MS fixed nothing as far as the OS (or foundation) is concerned, it's mayhem as usual.

Microsoft has become fixated on total control. If they can't get it right with what they have already, total control will mean total disaster.

There purchasing and development of these utilities are simply a smoke screen to make the average IT user believe MS is trying to focus on security. In the mean time, software vendors will be driven from the market and voila, MS gets closer to total control.

I can't believe they are building a new OS before they fix the current one. With their record of building on prior products, we can expect the new OS to be just as shakey.

Microsoft is trying to keep its market share by doing everything except fix their product, which is the very minimum the consumer deserves. However, the user is becoming more educated as time passes. Microsoft is not able to blow smoke as they have in the past. People are beginning to see the disparity between what MS says and what they actually do. And their current MO is just increasing that disparity.

The point about IE 7 and win2k is so very clear. If it was trully security at the heart of their motivation, win2k would get the same upgraded IE. But since money and control are the real motivation, they are trying to force everyone into buying a flakier OS(win2k kicks butt over XP).

Until the foundation is fixed, the house is subject to falling down. I think the author hit the nail on the head.
