my general credit is sooooooooo bad etc. etc.
Oh not a good belief. Au contrair an identity thief can use your identity for lots of things. A passport, a new drivers liscense. With a small deposit, get a "secured loan," utilities, phone service. There are many local credit places that will loan money to anyone. I went bankrupt once and I had NO trouble getting credit. i got high interest rates but I got credit.

ChoicePoint like many other data mining companies get their information from insurance companies and such. Not "just" from internet transactions. See my post below about the "coin of the realm". YOU have value for them with good or bad credit. They have customers that buy lists with folks in your exact situation to solicit for such things as I described above. Ever get a mailer for debt relief or bankruptcy or ads specifcally targeted to those with poor credit history. Guess what? They bought a list.

"The abuse of personal information and the lack of interest in identifying, prosecuting and punishing identity thieves on the part of private industry AND the law enforcement community is appalling. Shall we start a grassroots internet movement? We ARE registered voters, right?"

The best thing is to research this more and contact your reps and stay on there tails and do the grass roots word of mouth. Contrary to popular belief politicians do listen. 100 hand written letters to them equals 100,000 constituents. Do the math and get your friends and family to write.

Sigh so it goes.
