ALERT! Rant Ahead You have been warned
First of all this is totally unacceptable. Companies that warehouse our private information need to take steps that insure people are legit that request information from them.

Next Choice Point should be civily liable for any damage that occurs from the theft. I also find it apalling that California is the only state that requires by law that places like Choice Point must notify customers in cases such as this. Choice Point has said that they will "voluntarily" notify those affected but what is outrageous is that they are not legally bound to do so. Choice Point could have said "oh well, bovine bagels happens," and just washed their hands of the issue.

Identity theft is not vigorously prosecuted. The banks, lending institutions and businesses willingly write off the losses to identity theft. This translate into higher commidty prices, higher interest rates and higher insurance rates. Bottom line the consumers take identity theft in the shorts. Law enforcement and businesses act as if the results of identity theft is a natural cost of doing business and that is bull cahcah.

As we all know the person who has had their identity stolen pays a terrible price also with little orr no chance to recoup their losses while the offenders in most cases run free.

In the past few months I have read this story over and over again only different entities from businesses, governements and professors have allowed our personal and private information to be stolen. In each case a ho-hum attitude ahs been exhibited. Well so what does not cuti it. I believe those that steal the information should be found, charged, forced to make restittuion and then imprisoned.

I also believe that legislation should be formed that punishes the person that allows the theft to happen. Those business or governement entities should by law have to notify the people that their information has been stolen. They should also be held libal for any damage caused. There is just too flippant of an attitude with the handling of such things as our SSAN, Credit History, etc.

Infromation is the coin of the realm in more than one way. I for one am tired of this threat hanging over my head that I am not directly responsible for other than doing business in the United States.
