But to expect a high schooler who wants to e-mail and IM their friends to be a competent spam warrior is asking a bit much.


Most of the high schoolers I've seen know more about the computers than their parents. And several that I've talked to have ... in school mind you ... been taught to write virus'. I suppose it was a "well meaning" teacher that thought that it was best to show them what it does, but at the same time, when I heard this, I was appalled. Personally, I equate teaching them to write the things with handing them keys to cars and walking away. But that's just my opinion.

As far as losing rights to emailing ... I would think that stopping any outgoing mail until the machine is clean would be sufficient. Then, with repeated infections, possibly suspend the email account. Too many have been infected without knowing anything about it because even though their AV was up-to-date, it was a new enough bug that it didn't show up. I know there are lots of us that "troll" if you will for bugs to make sure that the AV companies have them. I say us, but technically, I've only run into one that Norton, McAffee, NOD32 and Panda didn't have, although, Trend DID have it so at least I knew what it was I was looking at.

I look at computers like communities ... your house is only secure as long as someone hasn't decided they want in. Locks only keep honest people honest and AV's only keep out so much because of the same principle. And honestly, don't we have "big brother" and Uncle Sam in way too much of our lives now? Seems to me it would be better for the ISP's to police themselves and try to cut down on both the bugs and the spammers.
