the major problem with what you suggest is that in order to accomplish that, every existing smtp engine in the entire world would have to be rewritten and once that happens what is to stop the virus/trojan writers from making their mail engines identify themselves as legit.

oh and forcing joe average computer user to take more than average precautions against the bad guys is like telling everyone they need to pay for their own private security force it is just not practical.

what is really neccesary is for ISP's to take some responsibility for internet security. A resposible service provider provide enterprise quality security at the border of their network, and joe average user could then quite happily use their computer safely.

the ISP's could quite happily say that along with providing internet access we will provide X minimal level of security, including proper filtering of their networks, and working with their clients to ensure that the client gets the service and security they need. the secure ISP model is one which would benefit all internet users.

I am thinking here of a service agreement with the ISP which includes providing operating system patches, antivirus updates, and an internet access device which includes a firewall. we should not punish computer users for the actions of bad people, we need to help people protect themselves in the first place.
