IBM tips the balance, yes.
Software was at one time a do-it-yourselfers dream, as you say. Then IBM came produced its pc, and now business could take over completely. The do-it-yourself producers of significant applications were already being pushed out; after IBM they were driven out.

With open source, yes, at one time it was the return of do-it-yourself. Then IBM saw the uses of free software, especially Linux and took control, complete and definite.
I've been hearing that it has been a very long tiome since volunteers had much to do with Linux, and I suppose that's good. But don't think the do-it-yourself American spirit has anything to do with Linux anymore.

Yup, IBM, killing the American spirit each generation.
