Money is always involved
With Windows reputation taking an ever-increasing public thrashing (have you noticed that the articles about vulnerabilities that only used to appear on sites like this have started running on CNN and Fox news?), and prices dropping for Apple products, and Linux growing in acceptance, and Firefox gaining ground, and OpenOffice getting better, and countless other examples, Microsoft had better worry about lost potential business. Around these parts, Windows is already considered damaged goods (by and large), but that reputation has the potential to cost Microsoft some serious money when it goes mainstream. You'll have 70-year-old grandmothers hearing Katie Couric talk about how vulnerable their Windows-based systems are. That's when it hits the bottom line hard.
