If it turns out that MS AV is of low quality...
...then MS is only shooting themselves in the foot in the long run. I'd like to think that MS is a bit smarter than that and will make every attempt to offer an AV product at least as good as Symantec's or McAfee's.

If they do not make that attempt, or fail in their attempt, then it would have been better to have not even gotten involved in the AV business in the first place. A failure would make people even MORE likely to jump ship. And I think MS is at least smart enough to realize that.
