All (not just Californians) should be notified..
California is the only state that at least tries to protect its consumers, but this should be available to people in all states. Why is it not? Because the credit industry does not want to put up any barriers to "easy credit" and access to marketing information. When the credit reporting legislation was updated last year - the financial industry got the plum it wanted - permanent extension of the preemtion law - bans any attempt by a state to impose a stronger credit protection law over a weaker federal law.

This is why I no longer apply for any credit. Credit reports are loaded with errors and if you give them any information, even to dispute errors, on youself(say current address), you are making it easier for a creditor to come after you for any identity-theft related charges. So any information from credit reports (gained from credit, rental, or employment applications) is no longer in your control. Also information now coming from apartment owners, utility companies, check reporting systems (Chexpoint) are other avenues. And auto and health insurance companies are using (and reporting?) databases so that your claim information for auto accidents or medical usage is getting recorded.

Time for serious privacy laws is now, else it will not be just consumers that will suffer. Its not just big brother we need to worry about .. ITS BIG BUSINESS.
