ummm..
installing software in linux has little to do with linux itself, more so on bad programmers. They dont feel like making an installer, so they just zip it up and make people manually install. The same could be done in Windows, but the programmers know they will never get their software out there on Windows, because WIndows users arent used to it. Most linux users are used to it, so they are lazy. There are programs out there that you do little more than just run a script (which can usually be done by double clicking) and it goes through a whole install that looks much like an install on Windows.

and your comment about IBM and DOS.. ill take that as a joke...
