ISPs need to re-examine their role in security
rtAlec is headed in the right direction! It is ISP's who are, in effect, the Dept. of IP Transportation, and they need to police the bridges, highways, and interchanges of the internet for irresponsible or malicious drivers. The basic problems of the internet revolve around protocols designed for the gentile world of academia that are now serving the worldwide masses, including spammers, hackers, terrorists, organized crime, and others. ISP's are the gatekeepers of the on-ramps to the internet, and collectively they can mandate the structural changes necessary to improve its security, accountability, and maintainability. It is ridiculous for mere email messaging to be a major enterprise network security threat on a daily basis. Americans, especially, need to understand that our intellectual capital (patented processes, trade secrets, research in process) is being stolen off our corporate WAN's by our industrial competitors using the internet as their battering ram. When this technology is incorporated into lower cost imported products without any licensing royalties whatsoever, the fruits of this theft will be fully realized at our society's expense. If you don't think that this is true, ask the network administrator of any large manufacturing or R&D firm where most of his/her well-crafted, hostile external IP traffic is originating and where it is being directed. Then ask yourself: what are those people after that they work so hard to get in?
