Ancient history, yes. Irrelevant, no. The Mac was the only other computer to hold a respectable market share percentage. In the early 90s it had well over 10% and had it's share of virus problems. Enough that running antivirus software was highly recommended.

If you're talking OS X, I have to agree. But then again OS X has such a tiny market why would virus writers bother. In the pre OS X days, when the Mac had a significant marketshare, there were also a significant number of Mac viruses that weren't associated with Microsoft Office apps. These were boot sector viruses that infected and spread via removable disks. At the time, this was the primary way to get files from one place to another and virus writes made use of it.
