this isnt about killing
if you knew someone was an axe murderer and you made his/her life difficult by gluing all their axes to the floor then you might get charged with mischief or vandalism, but since nothing was actually vandalized, it would be like a prank.

how about a step further. you know someone is an axe murderer and you follow them. when theyre about to murder someone, you start making noise and alerting the person somehow to get out, you might get charged for stalking, but if they made a mistake and get caught while you are doing the stalking, then you are going to be praised for saving that life etc blah.

still this isnt about murder, its about robbery.
if you are across the street from a bank and you see people go in with guns, you of course call the cops but you might even go slash the tires of their getaway car. cops wouldnt write you a vandalizm ticket for slashing the bad guys tires.
