What you describe is not self defense
For self defense you must have an immediate and reasonable fear for you life. For example in robbery where a gun man is about to shoot you. That's cleary self defense. If the gun is just used for the robbery then self defense becomes a weaker argument but is still possible. If a guy demands money from you with threat self defense is even possible but I'd hate to roll the odds on it working.

What you describe is viglilantism. You can not go out and kill someone for thier criminal actions against others. You can't even kill a criminal after they commited crimes against you. You can only kill the criminal if the criminal is posing an immidiate and reasonable threat to you life.
