Right click then Left click is cumbersome?
It is also very cumbersome to switch to Admin mode, so very few home users change those priviledges.

Right click on program, left click on Run As and choose administrator. What is cumbersome about that?

Where I have found the most difficulties in running XP as a non-admin user is in the applications. Far too many of them simply assume that you will be admin and don't work quite right if you aren't. By "far too many" I mean "every single game", Visual Studio .NET, and EAC (Exact Audio Copy). I did have a problem once with Nero but they had a little registry patch to fix it.

The defaults in XP suck but it takes 2 minutes to fix. Since you have obviously setup Linux for your wife and kids and you are obviously knowledgeable in the ways of security, you could have setup a secure XP environment for them in very little time.
